Yoga for PTSD, immersion for Yoga Teachers and Service Providers "Traumatic Stress: Resiliency and Healing with Yoga"
Limited Capacity seats available

The carefully selected faculty and comprehensive courses in the SYF Gives Back training aim to provide: the latest in scientific research and support for alternative modalities in healing; specific practical techniques of yoga, pranayama and meditation and an understanding of why and how they work in relation to trauma and the nervous system; a comprehensive overview of complex trauma, PTSD, and TBI; break out sessions with practitioners working in specific populations (veterans, first responders, survivors of abuse/war/crisis, caregivers, injured athletes, etc) to help guide you to a deeper understanding of how to apply these universal healing modalities to the specific community you intend to serve. In providing these trainings over the years we have realized that it is the same YOGA that benefits everyone, and that trauma works in the body in a consistent way. These universal principles may be applied to each unique individual through the care of the teacher. We want to give teachers the tools to take these skillful means to heal their communities throughout the world.

8am-4pm Thursday, March 9th. 8am-12pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday March 10-12 with up to 20 CEUs

Heart of Yoga: The Promise of Healing - Mark Whitwell

iRest Yoga Nidra for Trauma - Molly Birkholm
There are many reasons iRest Yoga Nidra is being broadly used in communities with high rates of trauma, including the military, homeless, human trafficking survivors, refugees, hospitals, and first responder populations. Clinical research is providing valuable insights into how these practices can be highly effective with insomnia, chronic pain, depression, and anxiety. iRest is a secular, trauma-sensitive form of Yoga Nidra guided meditation. Many elements of it can be used not just in the practice, but also in 1-on-1 private sessions and in daily life. The session will include a short opening iRest, a lecture and discussion on the essential elements of iRest Yoga Nidra, a 1-on-1 co-meditation experience, as well as a deep 1 hour iRest Yoga Nidra experience.

Serving Yourself & Serving Others - Gina Garcia
When we talk about serving others, we rarely talk about serving ourselves.  We teach, we reach out, we share, we give, we serve and yet we don’t make it a priority to take care of ourselves. This workshop is one of the most important elements to doing this service work. Because when we serve ourselves, we serve others. You’ll learn tools and practices to keep you inspired and energized in your journey of teaching. No more burn out and fatigue.  It’s time to take a new approach and prepare yourself for doing this work for a life time.

#unstoppable Trauma Sensitive Training - Yoga Tools & Practices - Gina Garcia
We all come from different walks of life and along the way we all experience trauma and challenges.  With the #unstoppable tool kit and training you will learn how to be resilient and unstoppable when you encounter challenges or perceived setbacks. This training showcases how to use the #unstoppable toolkit which is rooted in the Baptiste Methodology.  The tools include asana, meditation, breathing techniques, relaxation techniques and self inquiry and how you use them to be more resilient and unstoppable.  Through an embodied experience of these tools in your own practice and in your life, you will learn how to share these tools with others.

Taming the Komoto Dragon Within:  When talking about a problem won't work.  - Suzanne Connolly
Find out more about the inner workings of the most primitive parts of our brains and how to remap this difficult to reach neural connections. You actually have many brains in one and they all perform different duties. While they all have important functions, there are primitive parts of the brain that sometimes outlive their usefulness. We usually think, for instance of Post Traumatic Stress as something that is deep-seated and resistant to change. Yet, when you understand how trauma is stored and how to connect with that part of the brain with mind-body approaches, the road to recovery is often surprisingly easy.

Enhance your Yoga Sessions using Tapping: An Introduction to Thought Field Therapy  - Suzanne Connolly
The evidence based original tapping technique that is changing the world one heart at a time.Learn the basics of Thought Field Therapy, a proven, highly-effective, non-invasive brief therapy technique that was developed and refined over the last 35 years by the late psychologist, Dr. Roger Callahan and his wife Joanne Callahan. TFT utilizes a sequence of self‐tapping to stimulate specific acupuncture points while recalling a traumatic event or cue. It facilitates the relaxation response while the person experiencing exposure to the problem by simply thinking about the problem. The improvement is almost always relatively quick and, in most cases, long-lasting. The National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP) a searchable online database of mental health and substance abuse interventions (a service of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Agency (SAMHSA) within the federal Department of Health and Human Service) has listed Thought Field Therapy as an effective evidence-based practice for improving personal resilience/self-concept, for improving self-regulation, and for reducing trauma-and stressor-related disorders and symptoms. They have also listed Thought Field Therapy as promising, for reducing depression and depressive symptoms; for improving general functioning and wellbeing; for reducing phobia, panic, and generalized anxiety disorders and symptoms; and for reducing unspecified and other mental health disorders and symptoms. http://nrepp.samhsa.gov/ProgramProfile.aspx?id=60#hide1

FOR PROFESSIONALS: As a therapist or health practitioner, you’ll invite your client to identify a problematic thought or memory that they wish to heal. This could be an anxiety, a past trauma, anger, feelings of guilt, shame or embarrassment, addictive urges, or even physical pain. Then, typically, they’ll watch that disturbance, addictive urges or pain diminish as you instruct them to tap on certain areas of the face and hands in a specific order. Even the most skeptical clients usually report that TFT reduces the intensity of their unwanted feelings. While no therapist can offer a guarantee; clients typically cannot get back the original feeling of upset, even if they try. Addictive urges and physical pain require the person to self‐treat between appointments. Thousands of psychotherapists, medical doctors, nurses and others in the caring professions around the world use Thought Field Therapy as a complimentary alternative technique to help others in need.

FOR YOGA Professionals: TFT can help your clients release the unwanted feelings, negative patterns and emotional burdens that they carry with themselves day to day. It’s a simple tapping technique that they can use anywhere, anytime, whenever they need to. While the process is simple, their body and their mind will work together in a highly sophisticated way to eradicate the core of the feelings that get in the way of living a full, rich and satisfying life. Traumas, guilt, fears, shame, anxiety and depression are a few of the most common reasons people use TFT. Numerous scientific studies have proven its effectiveness around the globe. Whether you want to use TFT for yourself or you want to integrate it into your yoga practice you will take away a tool that will likely have life to change effects.

Trauma in the Second Degree: Intergenerational PTSD Within Military and Veteran Families - Pamela Stokes Eggleston
Yoga and meditation offers several practices for healing and transformation. With military and veteran families, these tools can uniquely aid in easing stress, burnout and fatigue. Additionally, understanding the nuances of secondary PTSD and intergenerational trauma is important to working with veteran and military families. Many military and veteran families are depleted due to multiple deployments and PCS moves. In this workshop, Pam will speak to her experience as a military family member and wounded warrior caregiver and weave it in with the science backing secondary and intergenerational PTSD.

Breathing Through Emotions - Essie Titus
This session will include multiple breathing techniques coincided with mindful movement. Encouraging participant to establish a daily routine of breath awareness and turning toward balance. We will identify specific coping mechanisms and the potential to disassociate that create obstacles on our path. Often times we lack the dialogue and tools to fully express ourselves. Specific practice for specific feelings such as anger, grief, sadness, fear, anxiety, and depression. This session has been designed to support a routine of asana, pranayama, systematic relaxation, mantra, and meditation for an internal feeling of comfort and safety regardless of external circumstances.

Loving Yourself & Others
Limited Capacity seats available

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. - Dalai Lama Compassion is the natural state of the heart/mind, which takes action motivated by cherishing other living beings and by a heart felt desire to release them from their suffering. The Loving Kindness Meditation is a simple, heart-centered meditation technique with roots in Buddhism, sometimes called Metta. It’s practiced around the world to cultivate compassion for one’s self and others. And research shows that it indeed works. It creates more empathy and emotional intelligence. It also increases love, joy, contentment, gratitude, hope, interest, amusement, and awe. - Decreased migraine pain - Decreased chronic low back pain - Decreased PTSD symptoms among veterans - Reduced depression - Decreased schizophrenia-spectrum disorders, and - May even slow markers of aging! Loving Kindness Meditation can improve our connection with ourselves and others. And you don’t need to meditate for long periods to experience results. Anyone can do it, anywhere. Whether you are on your meditation pillow or are sitting in traffic. Changes can happen in a short amount of time, a 10 minute session can create positive changes.

Re-Write Your Relationship To Stress
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Instead of managing our relationship to our thoughts, we attempt to manage what’s happening around us. When uncomfortable situations surface in life, our automatic tendency is to back away towards comfort. Yoga, when practiced properly, actually uses discomfort to reveal where we are blocked and teaches us to relax even while feeling uncomfortable. Gradually, we loosen the grip of resistance and widen our capacity to remain integrated in other situations. In this workshop, we will use yoga-based techniques to skillfully approach intensity and practice re-writing our relationships to the circumstances we otherwise waste our energy attempting to control or avoid. This session is open to yoga enthusiasts of all experience levels. The Posture of Consciousness is a unique blend of Hatha and Raja Yoga. The session is a combination of correct understanding and direct experience.

Tech Neck
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Long hours spent at a computer create a forward-pitched head posture resulting in neck & shoulder tension. Carrying around children, driving, and stress from every day activities can also slowly whittle away at our uprightness creating a head-forward, slump-shouldered and collapsed chest posture often resulting in neck, arm and upper back pain (what Tias Little calls "schlump-asana"). The focus in this workshop will be on releasing tension in the neck, upper shoulders, and jaw and creating greater freedom of movement in those areas. Reducing cranial pressure may also result in relief from common complaints such as migraines, insomnia, eye strain, and bruxism. The shoulders are so closely tied to the neck that when there is shoulder strain it often comes with neck pain. In this workshop, we'll explore gentle flowing movements (the SATYA work developed by Tias Little) as a way of releasing holding patterns in the neck and shoulders and hydrating these areas with an increased flow of blood & prana, both vital in maintaining the health and longevity of the shoulders, cervical spine, and their surrounding structures. Parameters for participation include: the ability to get up and down off the floor without assistance, freedom from medical devices, and no acute spinal disc or nerve compression. No prior yoga experience is necessary.

Trauma, Tension & Triggers: Using yoga to calm anxiety and create inner peace
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Yoga is perhaps never as powerful as when used to cope with the effects of trauma. While the human body is masterfully equipped to endure such experiences, when they’re over, the survivor is left with the residue of the incident playing out in his or her mind and body. Physiologically, this can put survivors of trauma on edge, or make us feel anxious, tense and reactive, even in a safe environment. During traumatic events, and often long afterwards, hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, are released into the body, stimulating the nervous system into fight, flight or freeze. Trauma survivors have trouble discharging this pent up energy, regulating our nervous systems and restoring ourselves to a state of rest and ease. In this workshop you will learn to use yoga as a tool to come back to your body and be present in the moment. Through asana and breath, you will learn to release stuck stress, calm your nervous system and create a sense of inner peace and relaxation. Postures will be done slowly and gently, to nourish your over-taxed physiology, build tolerance for day-to-day stress, and increase your capacity for contentment and joy.

The Role of Restoration Yoga as a Healing Practice
Limited Capacity seats available

Restorative Yoga may seem to be intimidating at first. How to place the supports, the blocks, the straps.....? Relax- this is the key word in restoration, Relaxation. In this session, learn what makes this practice more than just relaxing, but a true state of Surrender. Most people spend a great deal of the waking, conscious day (and truthfully, their slumbering unconscious night!) in dealing with stress. For many folks, the very act of lying back and being still is even in itself a massive shift in allowing. Minds are busy filling in the gaps of what I woulda, coulda, shoulda have done. Or endlessly loop around the what I must do next. This process creates a mental crazy train that is deftly crippling otherwise normal, healthy people. Teaching them what slowing down even means, is a challenge! Add to this, the amount of toll that is placed upon the human body through overindulgences- whether this be too much sitting at a computer, or too much spinning in the gym. Our bodies find healing in the place between such states. The beauty of Restoration yoga, is that even people with no prior yoga experience, or who are in recovery from addictions and trauma, can find deep psychological support and healing in profound ways. In fact, the vulnerability that can be exposed and then lovingly supported is beautiful. Come experience for yourself why this gentle practice is so dearly needed in a time of accelerated change.

Deep Relax
Limited Capacity filling up

Taught by Danielle and created by Sri Dharma Mittra, our guided restorative session to help you break free from the stress of the noisy and restless world that maintains its presence in our bodies and minds at all times. This practice will allow you to take the time to let all the cells of your physical body, joints and organs de-stress and begin to find balance. This result occurs on an unconscious level as your bodily systems become healthy, balanced and refreshed. You will then be ready to sit quietly for the final minutes in the practice of contemplative meditation, to bring your awareness even further within and guide you toward the Real Self deep in your heart. From this place, it will be easy for you to acknowledge, see and feel the unity in the diversity, the sameness of all. You will slowly realize all is within and we are all one as Sri Dharma often says. Each session includes different special practices and lectures. Danielle has studied 1800 hours with Sri Dharma and is a registered 800 hour teacher with his school.

Yoga for PTSD, immersion for Yoga Teachers and Service Providers "Traumatic Stress: Resiliency and Healing with Yoga"

This session is open to yoga enthusiasts of all experience levels. Yoga Nidra ideally is experienced lying down, and can be done seated on the floor or seated comfortably in a chair. The session is a combination of correct understanding and direct experience.

Release your Psoas and Back Pain
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

The Psoas muscles are often referred to as "the muscle of the soul." When the psoas and tight hip flexor muscles becomes contracted due to injuries, poor posture, prolonged sitting, or stress, it can alter the biomechanics of the pelvis and the lumbar, thoracic and even cervical vertebrae. Until these muscles are released the muscles may stay contracted and go into further shortening and spasm very easily. A functioning psoas muscle creates neutral pelvic alignment and provides greater mobility and strength. You will experience a feeling of relaxation in your hips and back as you practice and end with a relaxing yoga nidra.

Heart to heart: Self care while teaching to trauma sensitive populations
Limited Capacity seats available

When we teach to trauma sensitive populations, we are doubly charged with teaching from a place of integrity. We must be willing to teach from a place of authenticity and total presence, while also maintaining unflinching safety for our students. How do we maintain those boundaries while staying engaged and compassionate? And how do we stay open while also taking care of ourselves? During this workshop, we will explore practices for maintaining personal well being while staying connected to the heart. We will explore our own reasons for doing the work we do, and delve into the ways that may or may not affect our ability to stay present with our students. Until we are scrupulously clear about our motives and the ways in which we care for them, we cannot operate with integrity. By tending to our own hearts, we can more fully attend to the hearts of others. Finally, we will identify specific practices for self care, including restorative yoga, soothing mantras, and self massage.
