Instead of managing our relationship to our thoughts, we attempt to manage what’s happening around us. When uncomfortable situations surface in life, our automatic tendency is to back away towards comfort. Yoga, when practiced properly, actually uses discomfort to reveal where we are blocked and teaches us to relax even while feeling uncomfortable. Gradually, we loosen the grip of resistance and widen our capacity to remain integrated in other situations. In this workshop, we will use yoga-based techniques to skillfully approach intensity and practice re-writing our relationships to the circumstances we otherwise waste our energy attempting to control or avoid. Long hours spent at a computer create a forward-pitched head posture resulting in neck & shoulder tension. Carrying around children, driving, and stress from every day activities can also slowly whittle away at our uprightness creating a head-forward, slump-shouldered and collapsed chest posture often resulting in neck, arm and upper back pain (what Tias Little calls "schlump-asana"). The focus in this workshop will be on releasing tension in the neck, upper shoulders, and jaw and creating greater freedom of movement in those areas. Reducing cranial pressure may also result in relief from common complaints such as migraines, insomnia, eye strain, and bruxism. The shoulders are so closely tied to the neck that when there is shoulder strain it often comes with neck pain. In this workshop, we'll explore gentle flowing movements (the SATYA work developed by Tias Little) as a way of releasing holding patterns in the neck and shoulders and hydrating these areas with an increased flow of blood & prana, both vital in maintaining the health and longevity of the shoulders, cervical spine, and their surrounding structures. Parameters for participation include: the ability to get up and down off the floor without assistance, freedom from medical devices, and no acute spinal disc or nerve compression. No prior yoga experience is necessary.

Trauma, Tension & Triggers: Using yoga to calm anxiety and create inner peace

Yoga is perhaps never as powerful as when used to cope with the effects of trauma. While the human body is masterfully equipped to endure such experiences, when they’re over, the survivor is left with the residue of the incident playing out in his or her mind and body. Physiologically, this can put survivors of trauma on edge, or make us feel anxious, tense and reactive, even in a safe environment. During traumatic events, and often long afterwards, hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, are released into the body, stimulating the nervous system into fight, flight or freeze. Trauma survivors have trouble discharging this pent up energy, regulating our nervous systems and restoring ourselves to a state of rest and ease. In this workshop you will learn to use yoga as a tool to come back to your body and be present in the moment. Through asana and breath, you will learn to release stuck stress, calm your nervous system and create a sense of inner peace and relaxation. Postures will be done slowly and gently, to nourish your over-taxed physiology, build tolerance for day-to-day stress, and increase your capacity for contentment and joy.

The human foot is a masterpiece of engineering and a work of art. -Leonardo da Vinci When you treat foot problems with yoga, you end up treating knee pain, back pain, hip pain, and all kinds of structural problems. We place our feet into tight (albeit cute) shoes, walk around on concrete all day, and generally ignore them unless they begin to hurt. 25% of the bones in our body are in our feet. 25% of the muscles in our body are in, or connect to, our feet. When the muscles in our feet become weak, they affect the structure of the bones, causing the arches to collapse. Fallen arches can result in tendonitis, plantar fasciatis and contribute to the development of bunions, shin splints, and pain in the knees and hips. They can even affect the lower back, neck, and shoulders. In this workshop we will aim to open the plantar fascia and strengthen the muscles in the feet and lower legs, resulting in both a greater range of motion and sense of balance. Our feet are a gateway into the entire body – the organs, spine, breath, and even chakras! Maintaining the health of our feet with regular care, can literally put an extra spring in your step - physically, energetically, and emotionally!

Restorative Yoga may seem to be intimidating at first. How to place the supports, the blocks, the straps.....? Relax- this is the key word in restoration, Relaxation. In this session, learn what makes this practice more than just relaxing, but a true state of Surrender. Most people spend a great deal of the waking, conscious day (and truthfully, their slumbering unconscious night!) in dealing with stress. For many folks, the very act of lying back and being still is even in itself a massive shift in allowing. Minds are busy filling in the gaps of what I woulda, coulda, shoulda have done. Or endlessly loop around the what I must do next. This process creates a mental crazy train that is deftly crippling otherwise normal, healthy people. Teaching them what slowing down even means, is a challenge! Add to this, the amount of toll that is placed upon the human body through overindulgences- whether this be too much sitting at a computer, or too much spinning in the gym. Our bodies find healing in the place between such states. The beauty of Restoration yoga, is that even people with no prior yoga experience, or who are in recovery from addictions and trauma, can find deep psychological support and healing in profound ways. In fact, the vulnerability that can be exposed and then lovingly supported is beautiful. Come experience for yourself why this gentle practice is so dearly needed in a time of accelerated change.

The Yoga of Chocolate: A Journey of the Senses

With the practice of pratyahara you can cultivate a more intimate relationship to your experience of sensation. A less common translation of the word pratyahara is ‘to recover the senses'. In this workshop, chocolate and asana will be the vehicles which we will use to cultivate that sensitivity, as our eyes, nose, mouth, tongue, heart, and whole body take in the delicate subtleties in the different varieties of chocolate. Combined with the chocolate tastings, we will explore SATYA, somatic movement techniques developed by Tias Little, to further heighten that awareness. In this workshop, chocolate will be used as a means of directing the participants' attention inward, and not at all as a gimick. The aim is to use chocolate as a way of encouraging people to slow down and really taste, savor, and enjoy their present moment experiences, whatever they may be ( (this one they will hopefully find especially delicious!) Combining the chocolate tasting with the SATYA work from Tias Little (SATYA stands for 'somatic awareness training for yoga asana' will allow the attendees to go deeper and deeper inward through a variety of different means, both complementing one another...as they become more attuned to the smell, texture, tastes of the chocolate during the tastings, their awareness of subtle physical sensation during the movement will be heightened as well!

In this session we will introduce the first 3 Southern Empty Hands Forms, including the Salutation form. Native to the Southern Kerala practitioners of Kalarippayattu, these forms are now utilized to find peace and stability in times of stress. These standing sequences include turns, blocks, and kicks where we metaphorically eliminate obstacles that block our path through life. Kalaripayattu is known as Kalari in the West. It is an ancient martial and healing art that originated in Southern India thousands of years ago and has influences from the Druvidains and Aryans. There are references of Kalari (referred as martial techniques) in the ancient text The Vedas, the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The history of Kalari is of mythology, secrets, exploitation and experience passed through the generations. It is amazing that the art is still alive today given its difficult history. Being that Kalari is both a martial and a healing art, a practitioner or viewer has multiple paths to follow. We (Kalari Movement) choose to follow and teach the health and wellness aspects of Kalari. The art is life practice of preservation, to preserve ones-self and the life of others.

The Psoas muscles are often referred to as "the muscle of the soul." When the psoas and tight hip flexor muscles becomes contracted due to injuries, poor posture, prolonged sitting, or stress, it can alter the biomechanics of the pelvis and the lumbar, thoracic and even cervical vertebrae. Until these muscles are released the muscles may stay contracted and go into further shortening and spasm very easily. The Dynamic Meditation is an active morning meditation using breath, sound and movement to unlock and release unwanted emotional and behavior patterns. It creates an opening of spiritual transformation through the body side of the mind-body-spirit trilogy. It can help identify blocks and soften or eliminate them so that healing and transformation can occur. The meditation will be an introductory half-hour active exercise, with eyes closed and focused on the inner state. There are five stages: chaotic and deep breathing, cathartic emotional release, upward energy flow and calling in of the divine (HU), witnessing, and celebration. It uses the breath to energize energies stored in our cells, memory energies that contain patterns of outdated behavior. This is an excellent practice for reclaiming centeredness when distracted by life dramas.

This session incorporates guided imagery, to bring participants to a state of deep peace and true sense of self and oneness with all that is.  It involves unwinding of blocked energy through multiple layers and gaining insights into what was stuck. This session teaches a form of meditation that allows for continuation of this work at home.

Satsang with Mohanji - A Rare Opportunity to Find Yourself

A “Satsang with Mohanji” session is essentially about YOU with the Master. It is all about finding yourself. As is typical of the tradition of liberation, Mohanji will use a medley of practices such as Q&A, discourse, dhyana (meditation), pranayama, mantras/shlokas, manana (contemplation techniques), etc., to allow the participant an opportunity to start entering their inner space and seek within. The actual flow will finally depend on orientation and energy of the participants. At this session, following satsang, Mohanji will give Shaktipat (energy transfer) to all participants who choose to receive it. The actual content of the satsang will be similar to the Friday and Saturday sessions (and thus the 2 hour stated session length below). The additional length for this session is to allow time for participants to receive Shaktipat. If necessary the satsang portion may be shortened to accommodate more people receiving Shaktipat.
