Shinrin-Yoku is a Japanese practice that was established in the 1980’s. Shinrin-Yoku translates to “forest bathing” or immersing oneself into a deeper connection with nature. Through a series of invitations that encourage participants to slow down and open the senses, an enjoyable quiet state of being takes root.

By engaging each of the senses more purposefully we begin to silence the distractions of the outside world that tend to keep us from being fully aware of our surroundings. These invitations allow us to become more present into place. The practice begins by coming together as a group then dispersing on our own into the forest then coming together again to share those experiences.

Research and scientific studies support the many positive health benefits that can result from forest immersion. Exposure to wood essential oils, called phytoncides, which are a chemical released by certain plants to protect them from disease, have proven to be a vital component to increasing natural killer cells in the body while further studies have shown that nature immersion reduces blood pressure and blood cortisol levels.
