Yoga is perhaps never as powerful as when used to cope with the effects of trauma. While the human body is masterfully equipped to endure such experiences, when they’re over, the survivor is left with the residue of the incident playing out in his or her mind and body. Physiologically, this can put survivors of trauma on edge, or make us feel anxious, tense and reactive, even in a safe environment. During traumatic events, and often long afterwards, hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, are released into the body, stimulating the nervous system into fight, flight or freeze. Trauma survivors have trouble discharging this pent up energy, regulating our nervous systems and restoring ourselves to a state of rest and ease. In this workshop you will learn to use yoga as a tool to come back to your body and be present in the moment. Through asana and breath, you will learn to release stuck stress, calm your nervous system and create a sense of inner peace and relaxation. Postures will be done slowly and gently, to nourish your over-taxed physiology, build tolerance for day-to-day stress, and increase your capacity for contentment and joy.
