Long hours spent at a computer create a forward-pitched head posture resulting in neck & shoulder tension. Carrying around children, driving, and stress from every day activities can also slowly whittle away at our uprightness creating a head-forward, slump-shouldered and collapsed chest posture often resulting in neck, arm and upper back pain (what Tias Little calls "schlump-asana"). The focus in this workshop will be on releasing tension in the neck, upper shoulders, and jaw and creating greater freedom of movement in those areas. Reducing cranial pressure may also result in relief from common complaints such as migraines, insomnia, eye strain, and bruxism. The shoulders are so closely tied to the neck that when there is shoulder strain it often comes with neck pain. In this workshop, we'll explore gentle flowing movements (the SATYA work developed by Tias Little) as a way of releasing holding patterns in the neck and shoulders and hydrating these areas with an increased flow of blood & prana, both vital in maintaining the health and longevity of the shoulders, cervical spine, and their surrounding structures. Parameters for participation include: the ability to get up and down off the floor without assistance, freedom from medical devices, and no acute spinal disc or nerve compression. No prior yoga experience is necessary.
